KALAMYAN (Anchovy)



 It is a small schooling fish that may be found in depths of 20 to 50 meters throughout the majority of tropical Indo-Pacific oceans, from Madagascar and Mauritius to Australia and farther east to Samoa in the west. Do not exceed 15.5 cm in length. It possesses 18 to 21 anal soft rays and between 15 and 17 dorsal soft rays. On the belly region, there are 2 to 6 tiny, needle-like scutes. Maxilla tip is pointed and extends to pre-front operculum's border. The body is a typical engraulid shape, with a silver stripe along the flank and a light transparent fleshy brown color. Typically, Indian anchovy eat planktons.
